CONFIDENTIALITY AND DATA PROTECTION

The data you provide will be kept strictly confidential and will only be used for scientific research purposes. All personal information will be saved on encrypted file servers behind secure firewalls at King’s College London and NIHR BioResource central databases. Anyone working with your data has a legal obligation to keep personal information confidential and has received training on the new General Data Protection Regulation policy as outlined in the 2018 UK Data Protection Act. We will only collect and store data that is essential to the project and with participants’ consent. Participants will have the right to access, restrict, withdraw, and be informed about the data they have provided. If a participant wishes to withdraw from the study, we will delete their data but may keep a record of the withdrawal. Data will be stored for as long as it proves beneficial for research into health.

Your saliva sample will be used to extract DNA which will be analysed for genetic information and stored in a secure laboratory at the National Biosample Centre, the laboratory facilities of the NIHR BioResource. Samples will be labelled with a unique ID number which will be the only link between your personal information and de-identified data (e.g. genetic data, questionnaire data). The link between this ID and your personal data will only be available to authorised individuals who have been trained in data protection.

Access to the data will be managed by the GLAD Study team and the NIHR BioResource, who will control permission to use the data. Access to data may be made available to other scientists under strict and confidential legal data-sharing agreements.  Researchers share the results of their studies by means of reports or scientific publications, which includes placing information/data on the internet, in press articles, in project leaflets and through other media. However, your personal information will never be disclosed in such reports.

COMPLAINTS

Any complaint made about any material available on the Genetic Links to Anxiety and Depression Study website or information relating to the study contained on external Internet sites will be addressed as soon as possible.
